FYI -- Anthony Smith and I recorded a 35-minute conversation last night, discussing the Barack Obama/Jeremiah Wright controversy, the complexity of Africentric and black liberation theology and history in this country, etc.
As I say in my post, "The bottom line is: White Christians need to work harder to understand the history and complexity of the black church tradition and the role of prophetic voices (like Rev. Jeremiah Wright)." Please watch it and share the link with others: http://www.knightopia... And post your thoughts/reactions in the comments on my blog or here. Shalom, Steve K. |

Hopefully I'll get to this tomorrow, Steve - I've just been swamped, but appreciate the link.

Thanks Steve and Anthony -- made me think of a line from the Preface to Os Guiness's book, The Dust of Death: "With some close friends I had eaten a leisurely dinner in a small restaruant on Telegraph Avenue. We were enjoying our coffee, our minds were relaxed and running deep." That phrase has stuck with me all these years as emblematic of those rare occasions.
I think the video conversation between Anthony and you will become a similar emblem of ways ghosts come out in the open where relationships and minds run deep together. Listen, you may not know about inner coversations or stories of deep sorrow mixed with gospel hope and promise about a shared racial history dwelling in this southern white boy. Maybe it's a labor of grieving to deal with these ghosts, too easy to stay in denial, to let them ride, to mouth distant and abstract political sophistry to keep them at bay. Prophets! Unwelcome knives to uncircumsized hearts, but ah, friends! |
